The
Hispanic Bible Ministry
The Hispanic
Bible Ministry is a bilingual Christian mission
work of the
Orthodox
Presbyterian Church (OPC) that
strives to preach, teach, and live the truths of
the Bible by sharing God’s word and ministering
His grace to the multi-generational Hispanic
community of Cicero, Illinois and the greater
Chicago area.
We are
supported and supervised by a local OPC church (Covenant
Church in Orland Park, IL), by the
regional church of the OPC (Presbytery
of the Midwest), and the national
church (OPC).
The
Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC)
The Orthodox
Presbyterian Church is a national church founded
on the belief that God reveals Himself through
His Word (the Bible) and through the preaching
of that Word. The name Orthodox Presbyterian
Church has special meaning.
Orthodox
means “straight thinking”, and the OPC believes
that our thoughts, words, and actions must be
directed only by the straight teachings of God’s
written word, the Bible (2
Timothy 1:13-14;
2 Timothy 3:14-17).
Presbyterian means that our church is
governed and shepherded by male elders (or
“presbyters”), according the teaching and
pattern of God’s Word (Acts
20:17-18, 28;
Titus 1:5-9).
Church
means that we are an assembly of sinners
who have been reconciled to God, set apart from
evil, and united to each other by the life,
death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ (1
Corinthians 1:2;
1 Peter 2:9-10).
Although the
OPC was founded in 1936, the church traces its
historical roots through the centuries from the
New Testament church (1st century
AD), to St. Augustine (4th century
A.D.), and to John Calvin and the Protestant
Reformation (16th century AD).
The OPC
believes that the gospel of Jesus Christ and
teachings of God’s Word are best explained and
summarized in the
Westminster Confession of Faith and its Larger
and Shorter Catechisms.
A
Brief History of the Hispanic Bible Ministry
In 2002, God
placed on the hearts of members, leaders, and
ministers at Covenant Church and in the
Presbytery of the Midwest a burning desire to
reach the lost among the enormous Hispanic
population in the Chicago area. This group of
believers began meeting in prayer and fellowship
to discern God’s will, and their fervent prayer
was accompanied by offerings collected for the
future work and by a pastoral search committee.
Four years later, in the summer of 2006,
Chris Sandoval
was called to be associate pastor at Covenant
Church, was ordained by the Presbytery of the
Midwest, and was charged with the task of
leading the Hispanic work.
After
researching various possible locations
throughout the Chicago area, Pastor Chris and
the elders of Covenant Church selected the Town
of Cicero, IL to be the “base of operations” for
the ministry. Soon afterwards, God brought
together several Hispanic families and
individuals from various suburbs and
neighborhoods to study God’s word, and by
January 2008, at least two separate weekly Bible
studies were being conducted by Pastor Chris.
The Bible
study members soon expressed a desire for Sunday
worship services, and on April 6, 2008 the first
worship service was held in the newly renovated
basement of Pastor Chris’ home in Cicero.
Evening worship services were held every other
week and then weekly until September 21, 2008,
when the ministry began worshiping in the
mornings and the evenings every Sunday. On
December 14, 2008, seven members were received
by the church after making a public profession
of their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, with
two them being baptized for the first time. Two
weeks later, on December 28, the ministry
celebrated the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper
for the first time.
With a desire
to reach more Hispanic families and individuals,
it was determined that a more public facility
was needed, and in February 2009 the ministry
began holding worship services at its present
rented location at 5247 W. 23rd St.,
Cicero, IL 60804.

Pastor Chris
was born in Chicago to Cuban and Guatemalan
parents and speaks both English and Spanish. He
received his Bachelor of Science degree from the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his
Master of Divinity degree from Westminster
Seminary California.

El Ministerio Bíblico Hispano es una misión
cristiana bilingüe de la
Iglesia
Presbiteriana Ortodoxa (OPC) que se esfuerza
en predicar, enseñar, y vivir las verdades de la
Biblia, compartiendo la palabra de Dios y
ministrando su gracia a la comunidad hispana
multi-generacional de Cicero, Illinois, y a del
área mayor de Chicago.
Somos apoyados y supervisados por una iglesia
local de la OPC (Covenant Church, en
Orland Park, Illinois), por la iglesia regional
de la OPC (Presbiterio del Medio Oeste) y
por la iglesia nacional (OPC).
La Iglesia Presbiteriana Ortodoxa
La Iglesia Presbiteriana Ortodoxa es una iglesia
nacional fundada en la creencia que Dios se
revela a sí mismo a través de su palabra (la
Biblia) y a través de la predicación de esa
palabra. El nombre “Iglesia Presbiteriana
Ortodoxa” tiene un significado especial:
Ortodoxa significa “pensamiento
recto”, y la Iglesia Presbiteriana Ortodoxa cree
que nuestros pensamientos, palabras y acciones
deben ser dirigidos solamente por las enseñanzas
rectas de la palabra escrita de Dios, la Biblia

Presbiteriana significa que
nuestra iglesia es gobernada y pastoreada por
ancianos masculinos (o “presbiteros”), de
acuerdo a la enseñanza y modelo de la palabra de
Dios (Hechos 20:17-18, 28;
Tito 1:5-9).
Iglesia significa que somos una
asamblea de pecadores que han sido reconciliados
con Dios, separados del mal, y unidos los unos
con los otros a través de la vida, muerte, y
resurrección de Cristo Jesús (1 Corintios 1:2;

Aunque la Iglesia Presbiteriana Ortodoxa fue
fundada en 1936, la iglesia se remonta a través

Una Breve Reseña Histórica del Ministerio
Bíblico Hispano
En el 2002 Dios plantó un deseo ardiente en el
corazón de los miembros, líderes y ministros de
la iglesia Covenant Church y del Presbiterio del
Medio Oeste de alcanzar los perdidos en la
inmensa comunidad hispana del área de Chicago.
Este grupo de creyentes comenzó a reunirse en
oración y compañerismo para dicernir los deseos
de Dios, y sus ferviente oraciones fueron
acompañadas por ofrendas recolectadas para la
futura obra y por un comité de búsqueda
pastoral. Cuatro años después, en el verano del
2006, Cris Sandoval fue llamado a ser
pastor asociado de la iglesia Covenant Church,
ordenado por el Presbiterio del Medio Oeste, y
fue encargado con la labor de dirigir el
ministerio hispano.
Tras investigar varios sitios posibles alrededor
del área de Chicago, el pastor Cris y los
ancianos de la iglesia Covenant Church
seleccionaron la ciudad de Cicero, IL como “base
de operaciones” del ministerio. Seguidamente, el
Señor juntó a varias familias e individuos
hispanos de diferentes suburbios y barrios para
estudiar la palabra de Dios; y hacia enero del
2008, al menos dos estudios bíblicos semanales
eran ya conducidos por el Pastor Cris.
Los miembors de los estudios bíblicos pronto
demostraron interés por tener servicios de
adoración los domingos, y en abril 6 del 2008 el
primer servicio de adoración fue conducido en el
recién-renovado sótano del hogar del Pastor Cris
en Cicero. Servicios de adoración por la tarde
fueron conducidos cada dos semanas y despues
semanalmente hasta septiembre 21 del 2008,
cuando el ministerio comenzó adorar por la
mañana y por la tarde cada domingo. El día 14 de
diciembre del 2008 siete nuevos miembros fueron
recibidos por la iglesia tras dar publicamente
una profesión de fe en el Señor Jesucristo, con
dos de ellos siendo bautizados por vez primera.
Dos semanas mas tarde, en diciembre 28, el
ministerio celebró por primera vez el sacramento
de la Santa Cena.
Con el deseo de alcanzar todavía mas familias e
individuos hispanos, fue determinado que un
local más público se necesitaba, y en febrero
del 2009 el ministerio comenzó a conducir
servicios de adoración en su presente localidad
en el 5247 W. 23rd St., Cicero, IL
60804.

Pastor Cris
El Pastor Cris nació en Chicago a padres de
orígen cubano y guatemalteco, y habla ambos
ingles y español. Recibió su título
universitario del Instituto Tecnológico de
Massachusetts (MIT), y más tarde su maestrado en
Divinidad del Seminario Westminster en
California.
